About the Conference

Welcome to the first Letters In Design conference in collaboration with Dublin Institute of Design.

With a love for all things Letterforms the Letters In Design conference aims to bring together creatives of every age and description, be it Calligraphers, Signpainters, Students and Designers to learn and share their experiences with each other.

We will also be featuring some live demos from some of our artists and speakers.

With over 30 years experience, Steve Simpson is renowned for his hand lettered packaging design, whimsical characters and illustrated barcodes. His distinctive style, inspired by the arts & crafts movement, 50s advertising and folk art, has appeared on everything from 1’’ postage stamp to a 200ft screen in Times Square. His work has adorned whiskey bottles and cough bottles, boardgames and board rooms, hot sauces and ceramic saucers. Since 2008 Steve has won over 50 awards for both packaging design and illustration including Gold awards from the Association of illustrators, illustrators Guild of Ireland, the IDI and ICAD. He’s been an awards judge for Adobe, 3×3 and the Hong Kong Society of iIIustrators and is also a founding member of the illustrators Guild of Ireland and OFFSKETCH.
Steve has spoke at many conferences including OFFSET, OFFF and ICON as well as giving talks and workshops across Europe.



Art Director, maker for habit, Photographer and Calligrapher for passion, from 1999 he has worked in some of the most important international agencies
– Saatchi&Saatchi, DDB, Arnold worldwide. He then became creative director at Armando Testa and then executive creative director at TBWA Italy, where he worked until 2015.
During his experience at TBWA/Italy he founded First Floor Under, a creative collective that produced 12 exhibitions of culture and creativity in 3 years.
He is the founder and in charge of the brand image of the festival of Italian creativity( IF! Italians Festival). From 2015 he has been a member of the Calligraphy Masters team – online inspirational magazine for Calligraphy, Handlettering and Signpainting.
From 2007 he has been juror at the ADCI awards in different categories – Print, Film, Design and promo.

From 2013-2016 he has been a board member of ADCI. In 2018 he edited and published the book: The Design of Words in cooperation and distributed by Moleskine.



Victor Kams better known as “Mr Kams” or “Viktor Kams” is a calligrapher, graphic designer and tattoo artist born in 1980 in Madrid, Spain.
With a background as a graffiti writer for two decades he moved to England in 2001 to study graphic design. He was first introduced to calligraphy around 2008 by the work of Irish calligrapher Denis Brown, and started self teaching himself as a beginner. Afterwards he went on to study with some of the best contemporary masters such as Claude Mediavilla, Ricardo Rousselot, Luca Barcellona and Yves Letterme among others and got the solid fundamentals from them.
Making a name for himself by publishing his work on social media platforms he became a member of the collective Calligraphy masters in 2014. His work has been exhibited in places such as the National Library of Spain and the Design week in Milan as well as featured in publications like Dhaserie magazine, TYPE magazine and the Typism book 2 among many other physical and digital outlets.


Romuald Klodecki


Adam Romuald Klodecki aka THEOSONE is a designer, tattoo artist, street artist and calligraphy teacher. He lives and works in Berlin, where he has his creative studio Scriptorium Berlin.
Co-founder of the collective Calligraphy Masters. Calligraphy ambassador, he is a member of the collective Goverdonse, of the Polish Calligraphers society, of ATAK and of NHD. Supported by numerous artistic brands (Montana Cans, Pilot pens, Liquitex, Winsor & Newton, Conte, Letraset, Arches, Moleskine, Grog markers) he has worked for numerous design agencies and brands (Hennessy, Lego, Audi, Citroen, Liebeskind, ExGames, DC shoes….) and collaborated with numerous festivals and galleries all over the world.



Holly Pereira is an illustrator who specialises in illustrated type and lettering, murals and sign painting. After receiving a B.A Honours in Fine Art from the National College of Art&Design in 2004, she spent 7 years practicing as a painter, with exhibitions and residencies in Dublin, London, Berlin & Singapore. Hungry after years as a starving artist, she moved into illustration in 2011, where she discovered the exciting world of illustrated type. She also returned to education, graduating from The Irish School of Animation in Ballyfermot in 2015.
In 2016, she introduced sign painting into her practice, and brought her work to a large scale with murals and wall drawings.
In February 2019, she curated Letterbomb, an exhibition exploring type and lettering design.



Colm is a City & Guilds qualified sign writer and qualified from Bolton street in Dublin. He has worked for some of the best designers & architects in the country. He has worked in hotels, pubs, restaurants & industrial complexes throughout all 32 counties and as far away as London, Glasgow and the USA. He works with some of Irelands best sign erectors, joiners, carpenters, metal fabricators & powder coating companies.

Signs of


Signs of Power is Dublin based signpainter Vanessa Power. Her passion for typography and hand lettering naturally led to a career as a full time signwriter. Having hand painted shopfronts, cafes, restaurants and murals all around Dublin, Vanessa aims to change the visual landscape of Dublin one hand painted sign at a time. She aims to apply this to all her work. Her vibrant style acts as a bridge between the traditional craft of sign painting and the arresting aesthetic of the pop art movement. Having exhibited in group shows in Chicago, Belfast, London, Dublin and a solo show in Frame, Dublin 2017. She has also hosted sign painting workshops in Dublin and the U.S.A.



Nicolo Visioli was born in Milan in 1992. He is a calligrapher specialising in classical styles, in particular Roman Capitals with the flat brush.

In 2016 he became the youngest to enter and become part of the Calligraphy masters team and in 2017 he was hired by Peroni Nastro Azzurro to develop the project “The Label of Tomorow”. His task was to teach the art of Calligraphy and to create the re-styling of the new Nastro Azzurro label. He has worked for clients like Jimmy Choo, OVS, Peroni Nastro Azzurro, San Carlo, G-shock and the Italian parliament.
Some of his works have been chosen and published in various book/magazines like Typism Book 3 (Gold coast, Australia), Typism Book 4, Wired Italy 2017, Type Magazine 2018(Chicago, USA), The Ascendars Vol 1, Capsules Book (Melbourne Australia) and was chosen to create a limited edition in collaboration with the Disastro Gallery of Milan.

Letters In Design


We have 3 One day workshops running on day 1 on the 10th Oct with some of the best artists in their field. This is also a great way to getting to know some of the speakers before the conference

Workshop 1

Creative Calligraphy with Theosone


To experiment with different tools and techniques of writing and drawing on a chosen word to create a unique design.

During this workshop Theosone will walk you through a variety of Calligraphy, Lettering and Drawing tools. We will explore the techniques and many ways to apply Calligraphy in the art and design world.



Price – includes some materials(paper, ink, nibs, pens, markers)

Participants should bring
– not essential but your writing tools if you have any
– favourite ruler, pencil, rubber, compass

Workshop 2

Hand Lettering Workshop with a hint of illustration with Steve Simpson


Working on a single day project from rough thumbnail sketch ideas to impactful cohesive designs, combining hand drawn typography with illustration using traditional materials.


This course is designed for both beginners starting in the industry to those already established. Particuarly those wishing to explore hand lettering from an illustration perspective.

Participants should bring
– Sketchbook
– Scissors/Scalpel
– Ruler
– Prit stick
– Pencils, fibre tip pens and colouring materials (water colour/inks/coloured pencils/markers.
– Laptop/ipad or smartphone for accessing search engine for reference material (not for creating artwork).

Workshop 3

Brushpen workshop with Mr. Kams


To experiment with different tools and techniques of writing with the Brushpen.

Brush Lettering is one of the most popular styles in modern calligraphy. Mr. Kams will introduce you to the basics of brush pen lettering and the many ways you can use it. You’ll start with exercises to practice making strokes and shapes. You’ll then practise writing the alphabet, words and phrases with lots of help and guidance on hand.By the end of the workshop you’ll be well on your way to developing your own style.



You will be given a complete set of materials which you can take away after the class, including guide sheets and a brushpen.
